Instructions for Summer,
Welcome to AP US History. The 2011-12 school year will be busy as we prepare for the AP examination. .The exam tests knowledge of US history from the first European explorations of the Americas to the present. The exam covers political institutions and behavior, public policy, social and economic change, diplomacy and international relations, and cultural and intellectual development. I know that you have been well educated in early American History this past year so we will begin the course with a brief review of the Civil War and move on to the Reconstruction era.
Please review the following instructions and if you have any questions do not hesitate to e-mail me.

Date 1) You need to choose a book from the reading list provided and complete a dialectic journal. This journal is due on the first day back form school(September 7)
A dialectical journal is set up in the following manner: (By quotation, I mean a passage
from the book that you find interesting or important...it does not have to be an actual
direct quotation from a historical personality - it can simply be a quotation of a fact or
opinion that the author makes in the book) While there is no firm requirement for the
number of quotations that you should select, I would argue that you should be able to
select a minimum of 20 interesting items from any of the books listed above.
